St Joseph's Choir

St. Joseph's School, Launceston, has an excellent reputation for music. Choral singing has always played an important part in the life of the school and all pupils are members of the school choir.

The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and has been awarded the RSCM Proficiency Certificate. In addition was re-elected to the prestigious "St. Cecilia Guild" for choral excellence.

The choir takes part in competitions and has been very successful at local, regional and national level. For nine successive years, the choir was awarded the Travers-Stubbs trophy at the City of Plymouth Festival for obtaining the highest marks overall in the school choir classes. It was selected to perform in the National Competition to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the British Federation of Festivals.

The Senior Chamber Choir has passed the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music "Advanced" choral singing examination, obtaining a Grade A (outstanding) level pass.

Some members of the Senior Chamber Choir also take part in two smaller choirs - Cantabile (11-13 years of age) and Canzonetta (13-16 years of age). Both choirs enter competitions in their own right and have obtained first places with honours. In addition, following their outstanding performances in the regional heats of the National Festival of Music for Youth, both choirs have been selected several times to compete in the finals of the National Choral Festival at both the Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank. In July, 2001, Cantabile was awarded a 'Highly Commended Performance Award' at the National Festival. 'Upbeat', from Year 9 made its debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in July 2003, and in 2005, Canzonetta was awarded one of only three 'Highly Commended Performance Awards' in the 21 years and under category at the National Festival held in Birmingham. Canzonetta was also selected for, and performed at the National Choral Festival in Birmingham in July, 2009.

The choir competed in the finals and was a runner-up in the BBC Radio 2 "Minstrels in the Gallery" competition which was broadcast from Glasgow Cathedral. The choir has broadcast on BBC TV, has broadcast a series of carols on Carlton TV and most recently broadcast a series of carols for the BBC in December 2009.

However, the choir is best known for its work within the local community, raising between £2000-£3000 every year for local churches and charities.

The choir has toured Germany, Austria, Spain and Italy, where it has sung Mass at St. Mark's Basilica, Venice on two occasions. In addition it has given three a cappella recitals at the Basilica in Montserrat. Plans are in hand for another tour to Venice in July 2011.
