Whiteford 2006

BBC Spotlight coverage

It was just a Wednesday afternoon in Stoke Climsland, like any other Wednesday in late July.  Plans were underway for the Music Festival - people all over the village were busy preparing - all doing their part to make the weekend a success.  And then a 'phone call came that would result in the rest of Cornwall knowing just what a remarkable village we have...and Stoke Climsland was in the spotlight.

How did it all come about?

The 'phone call came from a BBC producer who had seen the publicity.
The BBC wanted somewhere to do an outside broadcast that Friday evening and were interested to know more about the festival and, once they read the incredible story they were hooked.

The crew turned up at 10am Thursday, and by that time, the decision had been taken to go live on the Thursday lunchtime, have coverage again on Friday morning and then host the whole show on Friday night.

The logistics were frightening, we needed someone to play the organ for the filming, we needed the circus kills entertainer to come along on Friday for filming, we needed children for him to film, we needed something happening on Thursday lunchtime when they went out live, we needed the audience there early on Friday, someone to go live on Radios Cornwall on Friday morning and how were we going to get the spotlight van under the overhanging tree in the field?

The story of the Whiteford Music Festival is an amazing one - the incredible growth, the fascinating history and the way so many people in the village get involved to make it a success.  It is a great weekend and a tribute to the people of this amazing village… now forever known as "the tiny Cornish village of Stoke Climsland"!
